Desk speakers buying guide: Sound that fits the desk.

Map the space, inputs and volume controls before adding speakers.

By CrowCatch · Buying guidance; not hands-on testing. Updated .

Measure where the speakers will sit

Look at the space on each side of the screen and the route for cables between speakers. Include the depth behind them, not just their front width. Think about nearby walls and whether the speakers can sit in a sensible position without blocking the display. A compact setup you can place well may suit the desk better than larger speakers squeezed wherever they happen to fit.

Know what supplies the power

Distinguish powered speakers from passive speakers that need a separate amplifier. USB power and USB audio are also different capabilities: a speaker may use USB only for power while receiving sound through an analog cable. Check the exact input arrangement, included power supply and cables. An attractive pair price is not the complete system price if an amplifier or adapter is still required.

Choose inputs for your devices

List the computer, monitor, phone or other sources you want to use. Confirm how input selection works and whether reconnecting is necessary. A headphone output can be convenient, but verify its behavior in the manual. If you intend to use a monitor's audio output, confirm that the monitor receives and passes audio through the connection you actually use.

Put useful controls within reach

Consider access to volume, mute and power controls after the speakers are placed. Check auto-sleep behavior and whether a remote is included or optional. For a shared room, low-volume behavior can matter more than a maximum output figure. Seek relevant measurements or demonstrations where available; wattage and enclosure size alone do not tell you whether voices will be clear at your listening position.

A practical comparison

For a single laptop desk, straightforward wired inputs and a front volume knob may remove daily friction. If you frequently connect a phone, an additional supported input may be worth considering. Compare the cost and space of the entire system, including a subwoofer if one is required for your intended arrangement. Avoid treating an optional subwoofer pictured in marketing as part of the advertised package.

Before you catch it

Confirm whether the package is a pair or one speaker, powered or passive, and which cables and adapters are included. Check the voltage specifications, warranty and returns. CrowCatch does not claim measured sound quality, room coverage or output from a retail description.
