COMPUTING WITHOUT THE TOWER

Mini PC buying guide: Small computer, complete calculation.

Check what is included, how the displays connect and where the box will live.

By CrowCatch · Buying guidance; not hands-on testing. Updated .

Distinguish a complete computer from a kit

Some mini PCs arrive ready to set up; others are barebones systems that require memory, storage or an operating-system license. Read the exact package contents. Add missing components and installation effort before comparing prices with a finished desktop or laptop. A photograph showing a monitor, keyboard and mouse does not establish that any of them are included.

Map the software and peripherals

List the applications you need, their supported operating systems and any attached equipment. Verify processor architecture and software support for the exact configuration. Check the ports needed for storage, audio, network and peripherals. If you expect to use a specific work application, establish its requirements first. The size of the enclosure does not describe what software it will run well.

Check simultaneous displays

Count the screens you intend to connect and write down their resolutions and refresh rates. Confirm the supported combinations rather than counting video sockets alone. A USB-C port does not automatically provide display output. Include adapters and cable costs. If the computer will be mounted behind a screen, make sure the proposed placement does not block the ports you need.

Think about access, cooling and maintenance

Read the manufacturer's placement and ventilation instructions. Check whether memory and storage are serviceable in the exact model, along with the supported component specifications. Noise and sustained performance need evidence under realistic workloads, not assumptions based on the word mini. A hidden mounting position can make a power button or USB port inconvenient even when the system physically fits.

A practical comparison

For a permanent home office, reusing an existing screen and peripherals can make a compact desktop attractive. For a person who regularly works away from the desk, it still needs a separate portable setup. Compare the complete arrangement, including a webcam, microphone, wireless accessories and any display mount. Check whether the power supply and mounting bracket are included in the specific package.

Before you catch it

Confirm configuration, package contents, operating-system license, upgrade support, display modes, power supply, warranty and returns. Check current software requirements with their developers. CrowCatch does not infer low noise, efficient operation or workstation performance from the enclosure size or processor branding.
