CHARGING ON THE MOVE

Power bank buying guide: Useful power for the bag you carry.

Compare usable connections, output and recharge needs alongside capacity.

By CrowCatch · Buying guidance; not hands-on testing. Updated .

Start with what needs charging

List the phone, headphones, tablet or laptop you expect to charge and the connections they require. Check each device's supported charging standards. A power bank suited to a phone may not provide the output a laptop needs. Decide whether you need one emergency top-up or several devices connected together. That choice affects output requirements, port allocation, weight and the cables you carry.

Separate capacity from delivered energy

A capacity figure in milliamp-hours needs a voltage context to describe stored energy. It is not a direct promise of the number of full phone charges: conversion losses and the device's own consumption affect the result. Compare the manufacturer's watt-hour specification when available and seek clearly described measurements if usable output is important. Treat an unexplained charge-count claim as an estimate with missing conditions.

Check the ports in both directions

A USB-C port can be an input, an output or both. Check which port charges your devices and which recharges the bank. Read the single-device and multi-device output table. Some banks redistribute power when another device is connected. For a laptop, confirm the required output profile and cable rating, rather than selecting solely by the largest total wattage in the listing.

Plan for the recharge

Check the bank's maximum charging input and the adapter and cable needed to reach it. A wall charger may not be included. If you use the bank every day, recharge time can matter as much as capacity. Pass-through charging should be used only where the manufacturer supports the intended arrangement. A built-in cable can be convenient, but consider whether a separate cable remains usable if it becomes damaged.

A practical comparison

For a short commute, a smaller bank and one compatible cable may be the combination you will actually carry. For a laptop away from a socket, supported output and recharge arrangements become more important. Add the required wall charger and cables to the comparison. If you intend to fly, check current airline and aviation-authority rules for the specific journey before packing; a retailer's travel-friendly label is not permission to carry it.

Before you catch it

Confirm the exact capacity variant, watt-hour marking, device compatibility, input/output specifications, included cables, seller and warranty. Read the manufacturer's use and storage instructions. Do not rely on a listing's appearance as proof of certification. CrowCatch does not infer usable capacity, charging performance or safety from a price reduction.
