USB-C cable buying guide: Same connector, different cable.
Buy for charging, data or video deliberately; the connector shape is only the start.

Name the job first
Write down whether the cable must charge a phone, supply laptop power, transfer files or connect a display. Some tasks need more than one of those capabilities at the same time. USB-C describes the connector shape; it does not establish all supported functions. Check the requirements of both connected devices before shopping. A cable that works for one task can still be the wrong choice for another.
Check power and data separately
Look for the stated power rating and data capability as separate specifications. USB-IF's cable guidance explains the capability markings used in its certification program. Check what the exact cable claims rather than assuming the same connector means the same performance. If a listing supplies only a charging description, do not infer a high-speed data rating from its appearance or price.
Resolve the video path
For a display, check the source device's video-output support, the display input and the cable requirements together. A laptop-to-monitor arrangement can also involve charging and USB peripherals, each with its own limitations. Prefer the manufacturer's documented connection instructions. A spare charging cable may not substitute for the cable supplied with a display or dock even if it plugs into the same sockets.
Choose a practical length
Measure the real route, including the bend around a stand and enough slack to avoid pulling on ports. Check whether the manufacturer specifies any limits or directionality for the particular cable. An active or specialized cable can have requirements that an ordinary short cable does not. Avoid adding adapters casually: every extra connection should be included when checking the complete path's supported capabilities.
A practical comparison
For overnight phone charging, a clearly specified charging cable of a useful length may cover the need. For a fast external drive, its data rating becomes part of the purchase decision. For a one-cable monitor desk, video and charging must both be established. Buying the most expensive cable is less useful than buying the one whose documented capabilities match the route.
Before you catch it
Confirm connector types, length, power rating, data rate, video support where required, seller and warranty. Keep the working cable labeled for its role. CrowCatch does not treat a printed logo or retail title as independent verification of a cable's certification or performance.
